Education & Certification Requirements
A. Standard Pathway
- Two years of college and an ophthalmic technician course.
- JCAHPO certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA).
- If not certified at hire, COA must be obtained within one year; maintain through continuing education.
B. Alternative Pathway
- Certification as a COT or COA.
- At least one year of ophthalmology experience.
C. Life Support Skills
- CPR proficiency.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or obtained within 30 days of hire; must remain current.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Patient Reception & Preparation
- Receive patients, review medical records, and prepare for exams/treatments.
- Assist ophthalmology staff; manage EHR records and reports.
2. Vision Screening & Diagnostics
- Perform/record visual acuity, color vision, tonometry, visual fields, and pupil exams.
- Determine need for further evaluation and conduct additional tests as directed.
3. Specialized Ophthalmic Procedures
- Assist with refractions, corneal topography, pachymetry, keratometry, biometry, OCT, ocular photography, ultrasound, and other diagnostic tests.
4. Surgical Support
- Prepare instruments, equipment, and patients for procedures.
- Assist during refractive/laser surgeries and provide postoperative instructions.
5. Medication & Eye Care Application
- Prepare/administer anesthetics, antibiotics, eye drops, ointments, and ocular dressings.
- Obtain eye cultures as needed.
6. Contact Lens & Device Assistance
- Clean, dispense, insert/remove lenses and fit special devices.
- Instruct patients on care and hygiene.
7. Equipment & Inventory Maintenance
- Clean, sterilize, maintain, and calibrate surgical/clinic equipment.
- Maintain stock; log calibrations; remove faulty equipment from service.
8. Emergency Response
- Recognize/respond to emergencies, assist in evacuations, and provide life support per policy.
9. Additional Support
- Assist with screening acute/routine ophthalmology patients as workload permits.
- Support refractive surgery clinic flow.
10. Safety & PPE Compliance
- Follow PPE, respiratory protection, and occupational health guidelines.
Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency with ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and sterile techniques.
- Attention to detail in data collection/reporting.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to respond effectively in emergencies.
Work Environment
- Clinical/surgical settings in a Military Treatment Facility (MTF).
- Requires prolonged standing, manual dexterity, and PPE compliance.
- Exposure to bright lights, magnification equipment, and medical instruments.
Performance Expectations
- Complete required certifications on time.
- Maintain accuracy in diagnostics and recordkeeping.
- Demonstrate professionalism and patient-centered care.
- Ensure compliance with MTF policies and maintain equipment readiness.
Reporting Structure
- Reports to Clinic Manager, OIC, or NCOIC.
- Works under ophthalmologists/optometrists in collaboration with other staff.
Compensation: $18.00 per hour
